7th grade ESM – Big Projects! (Nov. 2017)

ESM STEAM Magnet students, in Ms. Altounian’s 7th grade Math class, experienced the joy of art and math in using scrap they have to create Big Projects.  Their task was to use a common household product or item to design and build a larger scale model of the item.  You can see the love and joy of learning through their projects.

6th grade ESM – Robotics (Nov. 2017)

In Mr. Aleman’s Robotics class, students designed and built rovers using legos and also have been programming sensors, such as ultrasonic and color sensors, to accomplish challenging tasks. Following a line, avoiding obstacles, moving in a square and participating in a sumo wrestling competition are some of the challenges students have completed so far.

ESM 6th grade awarded a $1,500 grant!

ESM Sixth Grade teachers were awarded a $1,500 grant from Keeping History Alive.  The grant supports integrating history with other subjects in project-based learning lessons, and will provide field trips to Tall Ships in San Pedro where students will learn to sail on brigandines while engaging in STEM and history activities. https://lamitopsail.org/programs/topsail-stem-program/

Developing Sustainable Schools Curricula (Nov. 2017)

ESM teachers Ms. Grimaldi, Ms. Jones, Ms. Mitsuse, and GAT teacher Mr. Gabriel were guests of the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation at the Green California Schools and Community Colleges Summit and Exposition.  The teachers attended a breakfast meeting with California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson.  Also, the teachers worked with Ten Strands founder, Will Parish, along with representatives from Sepulveda Middle School and Wilmington STEAM Magnet to develop sustainable schools curricula.

6th grade GAT – Think-like an Art Historian (Nov. 2017)

After a 2+ hr. bus ride worthy of Odysseus himself, the 6th-grade Gifted Arts/Tech classes of Mr. Purdy, Mr. Piumarta, Mr. Gabriel and Mr. Garnett enjoyed their annual trip to the galleries of the Getty Villa Museum in Malibu, CA. They viewed Greco-Roman statues of Zeus and Athena, Roman mummies, ancient coins, pottery, jewelry, and experienced the Family forum where they could act out Greek myths and decorate vases. They look forward to returning next year!

7th grade GAT – Think-like a Mathematician (Nov. 2017)

7th-graders were math detectives at work solving a system of equations clue to find who was the thief that stole the ice block needed for a gala. After solving that crime, they headed to the Los Angeles Zoo to collect evidence for their annual Zoopalooza project, a cross-curricular study of animals, their habitats, and the dangers threatening their existence. Students will work in all areas of this research project, from science and history to math and English. See pictures of their zoo adventure here.

8th grade GAT – Think-like a Researcher (Nov. 2017)

Blast to the past as the 8th-graders researched technology they believed to be obsolete, dead, or dying for our annual Day of the Dead Technology Project. To see their memorials to these dearly departed devices, take a look at this slideshow of the altars. As a celebration of their work and the machines, the 8th-graders invited classes, teachers, and parents to join in on the celebration with a gallery of the altars in the library. THOR:RAGNAROK screening – 11/12/17

A huge THANK YOU to Pacific Theaters 18 at The Americana for a super fun screening of THOR:RAGNAROK on Sunday, November 12th. Our hosts gave 100% of the proceeds to T.S. King, and they even organized a trivia and handed out some prizes to our excited Kingsters!

6th grade GAT – Think-like an Advocate (Oct. 2017)

To make a curricular connection to the topics discussed following the Sandy Hook Promise: Say Something Assembly, Mr. Gabriel’s classes wrote poems and made flyers, bumper stickers, and short films.  We are currently in the Second Step Unit of Health, focusing on topics of empathy and communication, bullying prevention, and emotion management.

Halloween Costume Parade 2017

The KSNC kids went out around campus Tuesday morning a scooped up all the cutest, creative, and creepiest costumes they could find.  Then lined everyone up and paraded them around on our live show.  Each student got a short interview to talk about their costume.  Some were homemade and some were store bought, but all were fantastic!
