8th grade ESM – Learning about Native American life on a reservation

In English class, students have been reading “Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie. The book is about a Spokane Native kid who goes through challenges of discovering his self identity living on the “rez.”  This month the 8th grade students sent a care package to a Native American reservation in New Mexico. The care package was a way to show that they empathize with how life is on the reservation and we are thinking of them. The care package included school/art supplies, pajamas, canned goods, snacks and toiletries. The care package was received with a lot of enthusiam and excitement! Thank you 8th graders for opening your minds and hearts to understand what challenges exist for students in different parts of the United States.
