Halloween Costume Parade 2017

The KSNC kids went out around campus Tuesday morning a scooped up all the cutest, creative, and creepiest costumes they could find.  Then lined everyone up and paraded them around on our live show.  Each student got a short interview to talk about their costume.  Some were homemade and some were store bought, but all were fantastic!

Guerilla Curators

The Guerrilla Curators are a group of King artist girls interested in drawing attention (in the hopes of inspiring change) to gender inequity in the arts. They are sponsored by a Girls Build LA Grant written by Ms.Guthrie and Ms. Roth. Monthly art interventions are planned and all will be documented on their website: www.guerrillacurators.com. The first, a flash flower installation, took place on October 30, 2017 in the breezeway. The girls arranged orange and yellow marigolds along with posters featuring their self-designed logo and statistics loaned to the project by the Women’s Museum in Washington, D C., to offer students a brief infusion of beauty carefully tied to an activist issue on a cloudy October morning. Students passing through the breezeway on their way to classes gathered the flowers and  took them away. Isabel Perdomo Magarin and Pascale Sifantus, ESM students, are members of the Guerrilla Curators.

2017 Comic Con and King Invasion Festival

On Friday, May 26th teachers signed up to bring their classes  to the King Invasion Film Festival and the KSNC Comic Con.  Mr Palayan has been sponsoring the King Invasion Film Festival for over ten years.  Students make films about what would happen if aliens from another planet invaded our school.  Mr. Palayan’s Animation students and Mrs. Rinaldi’s Film students entered films for the festival.  Congratulations to “My Alien” the winning film by Dahlia Kasson, Jennifer Vu, Mayen Chhuy, Nicole Alexsanian, and Lillian Deng.  In addition to watching the top five films and honorable mentions, students viewed a documentary about actual UFO sightings in the United States.  Mr Palayan asked the audience if they believed if the sightings were real and look at the picture, almost everyone raised their hand!

Before and after the film festival, the library courtyard was set up with fun Comic Con themed activities.  There was a Twilight Zone themed maze, a Zombie Apocalypse Survival Scavenger Hunt, a Comic Book Art booth where students were able to create their own covers to win an actual comic book, and in honor of Star Wars: A New Hope‘s 40th birthday the film was shown in room 136 and there was a photo booth set up with Jabba the Hut and his prisoner, Princess Leah.

It was a busy day, but the teachers and students had a blast.  A great way to end a stressful three weeks of testing.

2017 Spring Concert by King Orchestra

King Orchestra, conducted by their fabulous music teacher Mr. Boktor, delivered yet another stellar performance last Thursday, May 4th, for their end-of-year Spring concert. This year, Mr. Boktor tried something really special: King Orchestra played movie sound tracks while projecting the movie in the background.
Kudos to Mr. Boktor and his amazing student musicians who played for the school during periods 3, 4, 5, and 6, plus an additional performance for the parents after school. That was about 6 hours being on stage and playing masterfully. Wow!!
Below are a few clips from the after school concert, or you can watch KSNC’s live recordings period by period HERE. KSNC had several cameras and they did an excellent job recording the concert from various angles.
Also, watch the video message that composer Ramin Djawadi sent Mr. Boktor and the King Orchestra after he heard that they were playing his main title and other selections from his score for HBO series ‘Game of Thrones’!!

Hands-On Camera Angles and Shots

Unboxing the new Canon r700 video cameras, students in Mr.Laguna’s elective class are learning completing their first film project. Working our way up to our first film short in October, students are learning cinematography angles and shots, and proper camera grip techniques. For the first project, students are learning about establishing, long, medium, and close-up shooting. Students are also learning about high and low angles, proper lighting and focus, and zooming techniques. Budding filmmakers were having  so much fun with the cameras this week, but quickly realized how much work goes into properly framing shots. “This is the like seventh time we did this over, but it looks good now,” a student told Mr. Laguna. Learning the basics of filmmaking well is a top priority for the elective. The next film project students will learn how to shoot action shots, and keeping continuity in their filmmaking. Fantastic job filmmakers, keep up the good work.
