Bike To School Day – May 10, 2017

May 10th was National Bike to School Day and Thomas Starr King celebrated in style.

Thanks to all who made Bike to School Day a success!!!

CD13 staff for coming out and supporting
LAPD Bicycle Division for escorting our Group Rides
LADOT for providing water bottles, lights, maps, and patch kits
Los Angeles Bicycle Coalition for route planning and group ride leaders
Alta Planning for support and providing a group ride leader
The Bicycle Clinic for hosting two King Fix-It clinics
The Golden Saddle Cyclery for providing a Fix-a-Flat clinic and group ride leader
Pure Cycles for donating a beautiful new bike
We quadrupled our bicycle riders and had many students ride to school for the first time! Our riders arrived to school exhilarated and received water bottles, lights and tire patch kits. Our raffle winner was Anthony Lam, 8th grader FAM student, who got to take home a beautiful Pure Cycle black and gold fixie. For more information on riding in LA, pick up a Bike Route map in the front office or parent center.

FAM Hiker’s Club

The first outing for FAM Hikers was last Saturday to Malibu Creek State Park. FAM Hikers is a group of students who go on bi-monthly hikes out and around Los Angeles. Twenty-four FAM students and parents, along with Mr. Laguna, departed TS King at 8am, and headed for the Malibu Mountains. Led by our Sierra Club guides Elizabeth and Anne, students saw an an abundant amount of wildlife, such as deer, lizards, quail, hawks, and domesticated horses. Identifying local fauna, such as poison oak was also included in the Saturday hike. At the end of the trail, students ate lunch on the former set of the television show M.A.S.H! Learning about Los Angeles’ wildlife and TV Land hits all in all made for a great day. To find out how you can be a part of FAM Hiker’s, please see Mr. Laguna in room 325.

Film and Media Lab

Roar01FAM03

Before

Over the summer, a former classroom used for storage and copy machines was set aside to be revitalized and used as a creative space and interactive Film Lab at Thomas Starr King Middle School this year. One of our very own FAM parents Rani Ben-Ezra and his company, Basix Designs Remodeling, donated paint and time to breathe new life into the classroom with a beautiful coat of Beacon Blue.

The Film Lab will contain 10 editing bays, each with iMac computers donated from Nickelodeon, stop-motion animation hardware, microphones, and advanced editing software. The Film Lab will also have 10 brand new Canon Vixia cameras, a green screen, and screening wall. Announcements will be made when the Film Lab is fully operational and include a community open house. Stay tuned and be ready for innovative student projects this school year.  Again, thank you Basix Designs Remodeling and Nickelodeon for help making this possible.

Harvey Milk Day of Service – May 2016

A big shout-out to King’s awesome sponsor EnrichLAour very own students from the Gay-Straight Alliance, and volunteers from the non-profit organization Gay for Good, and from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority of UCLA.
Last Saturday, May 21st, they worked together for a day of service here at King MS in remembrance of the late political and civil rights leader Harvey Milk. The community came together to remove weeds, plant native flora, and landscape the front of the school. In total, eight fruit trees were planted as well as forty native plants, and a drip irrigation system was installed in the front planters.
Check out what everyone did at the front of the school!

Los Silverlake Invitational 2016

Los Silverlake Invitational 2016 came and went this past Saturday. What a fun day!

For game 1, King and Marshall (in green jerseys) joined forces to play opposite a fully fielded MichelTorena team (in yellow jerseys). Our parents showed great potential and we hope a King Lions team will grow to challenge the undefeated Franklin Avenue team next year. The great Foxes took the trophy home again, after defeating the mighty Ivanhoe Dragons 2-1 during game 2.
